1. Use Windows Admin Center for unified management

Skip separate GUIs—install the modern, web-based Windows Admin Center to manage roles, updates, Hyper-V, and disks in one place.

2. Boost security with built-in protections

  • Enable Secured-core Server for hardware and firmware-level defense.

  • Use DNS-over-HTTPS, AES‑256 SMB encryption, and default TLS 1.3 for secure communications.

3. Improve network and I/O performance

  • Benefit from improved TCP (HyStart++, RACK) and UDP offloading features for smoother, faster networking.

  • Hyper-V virtual switches also include new RSC enhancements for better throughput.

4. Use Storage Migration Service

Easily move files and permissions from old servers (even non-Windows) to new hosts or Azure, with minimal downtime.

5. Leverage PowerShell 7+ side-by-side

  • Install PowerShell 7 (pwsh.exe) alongside legacy 5.1—it’s cross‑platform with improved syntax, module support, and remoting.

6. Optimize backup & update strategy

  • Use WSUS, Automated Windows Updates, or Azure hot-patch to keep servers patched continuously.

  • Consider Storage Spaces, disk health checks, and defrag scheduling for efficient storage.

7. Harden server access

  • Set static IPs, unique computer names, strong firewall and RDP settings, and restrict remote login to known IPs.

  • Consider enabling network adapter teaming for redundancy and throughput, now built into Server Manager.

8. Scale virtual infrastructure

  • Use nested virtualization with AMD support and GPU partitioning (Server 2025) for lab or container environments.

  • Enable Shielded VMs and vSwitch enhancements for secure, efficient virtualization.

Quick setup checklist
  1. Join domain & configure static IP.

  2. Install Windows Admin Center.

  3. Enable Secured-core, DNS-over-HTTPS.

  4. Turn on WSUS or patch automation.

  5. Set up storage health and backup jobs.

  6. Configure PowerShell 7 alongside legacy shell.

  7. Harden RDP and firewall.

  8. Use virtualization features and storage migration as needed.
