What exactly is a Domain name

A domain name is like the name of a shop — it helps people find your website on the internet.

Every computer connected to the internet has its own special number called an IP address, like 131.215.3.29. 

But numbers like these are hard to remember. That’s where domain names come in.

Instead of typing a bunch of numbers, you can just type something easy to remember, like old-books.co.za. 

It’s clear and tells you what the website is about — in this case, probably old books!

A domain name usually has three parts:

- The first part is the name (e.g., absa)
- The second part tells you what kind of site it is (e.g., co for commercial)
- The third part is the country (e.g., za for South Africa)

So, absa.co.za is a domain name for the website for Absa Bank, a commercial site in South Africa.
